PlayStation Portal Remote Player is designed to bring your PS5 gaming experience off the TV and into your hands. Instead of needing to sit in front of a television, this device lets you stream compatible PS5 (and PS4) games straight from your PS5 console — whether installed locally or via certain streaming libraries — to an 8-inch LCD screen. It aims to offer portable, flexible gameplay while retaining console-quality controls (via a connected DualSense wireless controller) and acceptable visual and audio performance.

Internet and network requirements — Because gameplay is streamed over Wi-Fi from your PS5, you need a stable broadband connection. Without sufficient speed or stability, performance can suffer (lag, quality drops, disconnects).
Game compatibility — Not all PS5 games or features will work. Games that require VR headsets (PS VR / PS VR2) or extra peripherals (beyond a standard controller) are explicitly not supported.
Controller dependency — You still need a compatible controller (like DualSense or DualShock 4) — the Portal itself is not a standalone gaming handheld.
Display quality and size — The Portal provides an 8" LCD screen at 1080p resolution (with up-to 60 fps streaming), which is good for portability but smaller than a typical TV monitor or dedicated gaming display.
Audio output — While it supports audio output (wired or wireless), sound quality may not match a proper home theater setup. For immersive gaming, external headphones or speakers may be preferable.
Convenience vs limitation trade-off — Portal offers mobility and flexibility at the cost of certain console-level features (visual scale, some hardware-dependent game features, shared screen).
Because Portal streams games from your PS5 over Wi-Fi, your network’s performance is arguably the most critical factor. In the listing, it’s noted that at least a 5 Mbps connection is required — but for smoother, more stable gameplay, a faster connection (e.g., 15 Mbps or more) is recommended.
These factors represent the most critical aspects that will impact your satisfaction with this product.
Although my absolute wish from Sony would be for a dedicated handheld, this will do for now.
The PS portal is a remote play device that connects to your PS5 allowing you to play games without use of the television. This is what it is advertised as doing, and it does this very well.
