The Samsung 990 PRO is a top-tier internal SSD using PCIe Gen 4 ×4 with NVMe interface, in M.2 2280 form factor. With blazing fast sequential read speeds up to about 7450 MB/s and write speeds up to about 6900 MB/s — alongside high IOPS (up to 1,550,000 read / 1,200,000 write) — this SSD targets high-performance applications: gaming (including next-gen AAA titles), video editing, 3D work, large file operations, and any workflow demanding very fast storage.

Interface & Bandwidth (PCIe Gen4 ×4, NVMe 2.0) — determines the theoretical maximum throughput, which affects loading times, transfers, and responsiveness.
Sequential & Random Performance (Read/Write MB/s and IOPS) — impacts real-world performance for large file transfers, OS/app load times, game loading, and multitasking.
Endurance & Longevity (TBW, Warranty) — total terabytes written (TBW) and manufacturer’s warranty are key for durability, especially with heavy write workloads.
Thermal Management & Thermal Throttling Risk — high-speed SSDs under workload generate heat; proper heat dissipation matters to maintain consistent performance.
Compatibility with System (Motherboard / PCIe Version / Form Factor) — For optimal performance, system must support PCIe Gen4; form factor (M.2 2280) must fit slot; BIOS/firmware support required.
The 990 PRO uses PCIe Gen4 ×4, unlocking up to ~7450 MB/s read and ~6900 MB/s write under ideal conditions. Because this interface offers much higher bandwidth than SATA or older PCIe versions, users will see significantly faster boot times, app/game loading, and large file transfers — especially on systems that support PCIe 4.0.
These factors represent the most critical aspects that will impact your satisfaction with this product.
I have purchased Samsung Pro NVMEs for years starting with 960's and always paid the premium because of their warranty and I never had one fail. Now the landscape is changing and there are competitors that offer close to the same performance and similar warranties at lower costs. With that said, these are great drives, reliable but not good value for the money.
I love this drive. I actually ended up buying another one for my second build. High speeds and durable. Plenty of storage for my games. Highly Recommended.
